Mission
The Fletcher Alumni of Color Association (FACA) was created to foster a strong and enduring community among Fletcher alumni of color and to further the interests, welfare, and educational purposes of The Fletcher School. The Association also serves as a forum to share perspectives with individuals at Fletcher and address issues of diversity.
Executive Board
Nihal W. Goonewardene, F’73 is the board-designated committee leader of the FACA Summer Internship Grants Program. He received MA and MALD degrees before working for Fletcher in Southeast Asia, based in Manila, as sole Regional Representative for the Asia-Pacific Teaching Fellows Program. Nihal became a founder of the International Science and Technology Institute (ISTI), Inc. in Washington, DC in 1978, and later became the ISTI President and CEO in 1991.
Nihal is also a member of the Fletcher Board of Overseers, a member of the Board’s Development Committee, and Class Agent for F’73 and F’74, and their Reunion Chair. He chaired the Fletcher Fund from 2004 – 2006, bringing annual giving by alumni past the one million dollar threshold for the first time.
Stevie B. Hamilton, Jr, F’02 is currently the Deputy Coordinator for Partnership Engagement and Outreach assigned to the Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications (CSCC) at the Department of State. Mr. Hamilton is also in the US Air Force Reserves (USAFR) serving as an Foreign Area Officer for Sub-Saharan Africa and has completed 12 tours downrange. Prior to joining CSCC, Mr. Hamilton spent 8+ years working on Counterterrorism issues at the analytical and operational levels for the Department of Defense, Special Operations Forces and the Department of Justice.
Mr. Hamilton attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA where he received his B.A. in Political Science and a minor in International Studies in 2000. He was an Earhart National Security Fellow while he pursued his MALD at Fletcher.
Kelly Smith, F’03 comes with extensive management experience across several federal government agencies and private companies. He is currently a manager with Deloitte and Touche LLP within their security and privacy services federal team. Mr. Smith is a 2003 graduate of the Fletcher School, where he studied International Security and International Business and received a BS in Chemistry from Morehouse College. In addition to Deloitte, he has worked for several organizations, including Booz Allen Hamilton, Zeltech, the RAND Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and others. He is the author of two publications and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
